What is Bluesky? Is it going to replace X?

As of February 2025, Bluesky boasts over 30 million users. But what is it?

Launched as an independent project in 2021, the app offers a familiar, X-like experience – allowing posts of up to 256 characters, media uploads, likes, reposts, replies, custom feeds and features like vertical video and private messaging.

Bluesky opened registrations to the general public in February 2024, a year after it’s invite-only beta release. Bluesky is user-friendly, with a simplified onboarding process and less intimidating community norms. Bluesky’s vision is to give users autonomy over their social media experience. Freedom to choose how they engage, what they see, and where they go.

Now led by CEO Jay Graber and no longer affiliated with Jack Dorsey, Bluesky continues to refine its features and policies as it seeks to establish itself as a meaningful alternative in a fragmented social media landscape.
