Leading the Net-Zero Transition in Cheshire West

The global shift towards a net-zero future is accelerating, and the North West of England and specifically Cheshire is at the forefront of this transformation. In 2025, the region is setting new benchmarks for innovation, collaboration, and economic growth through industrial decarbonisation.

Innovative Large-Scale Decarbonisation Projects

EET Fuels at Stanlow Oil Refinery, Ellesmere Port

• Commitment to Low Carbon: EET Fuels is on track to become the UK’s first low-carbon process refinery, aiming to reduce emissions by 95% by 2030.

• Hydrogen Production: EET Hydrogen, the UK’s leading hydrogen production project, is constructing the first hydrogen-ready combined heat and power plants (CHP) in Europe, set for completion by 2027.

ENCYCLIS Clean Energy from Waste

• Sustainable Energy: Encyclis’ facility in Cheshire will convert residual waste into sustainable electricity, heat, and other resources.

• Carbon Capture: The facility will capture and store around 350,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, equivalent to removing 200,000 cars from the road.

HyNet North West

• Decarbonised Industrial Cluster: HyNet North West aims to become the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster by implementing large-scale carbon capture and low-carbon hydrogen.

• Project Development: The project is moving into the next phase following a public consultation on the HyNet North West Hydrogen Pipeline.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) Production

• Government Mandate: From January 2025, all UK flights must use at least 2% SAF, increasing to 10% by 2030 and 22% by 2040.

• Fulcrum BioEnergy and Essar: Their waste-to-fuel plant at Stanlow Oil Refinery will produce approximately 100 million litres of low-carbon SAF annually by 2027-2028.

• Jet2 Partnership: Jet2 has secured an equity stake and committed to receiving over 200 million litres of SAF over 15 years.
