How to Get Clients as a Freelancer

Does getting new clients feel like an overwhelming task? It doesn’t have to be!

You don’t need to be sending cold emails to hundreds of potential clients each week – there are other ways. The best clients typically hire from referrals, but if you don’t have a network yet, how do you get that first client?

Here’s a look at some of the steps you can take to get that first client (and more!):

  • Create a website: Build yourself an online presence. A website will allow you to provide more detail about you, your services and any methods of contact. This will also help you to show up within search results when potential clients are researching.
  • Build a portfolio: This is your chance to showcase your skills and areas of expertise, giving future clients an idea of what services are available. Your portfolio can sit within an area on your website.
  • Utilise social media: Social media is a great way to increase your personal brand visibility and to create a community.
  • Attend networking events: These are all opportunities to find new businesses and clients, alongside connecting with other freelancers. It is also possible to attend as a speaker, providing your insight and knowledge to others.
  • Use freelance job boards: There are boards such as Fiverr and Upwork that allow you to search and post for jobs, alongside utilising LinkedIn to connect with clients.
  • Collaborations with other freelancers: Do you know anyone who offers similar services to you but a different audience? Or maybe someone who’s offering compliments yours and could become a package? This is why things such as networking events and social media are useful!
